Hayley Collis, BSc Cardiac Physiology

Why did you choose to study at Swansea University?

Every time I visited Swansea there was such a friendly atmosphere. The lecturers, who did the Open Days, and the existing students, really encouraged me that it was a good place to study. Additionally the department where I completed my work experience echoed that encouragement and emphasised Swansea University’s reputation of good courses.

Can you tell us about your course?

My course involved both studying in an academic setting and applying learned knowledge in a practical environment whilst on placement. The lecturers were extremely helpful and brilliant at giving advice when required. With such a large portion of the course being placement we were really encouraged to develop into the best healthcare practitioners that we could become to deliver a high level of patient care.

What part of the course do you/did you enjoy the most?

Placement. Although we had to travel all across Wales for our placements, we got to visit so many incredible places across the country whilst learning the skills we need to provide excellent patient care. This has enabled me to adapt within different sized departments and learn how to handle situations differently depending on my surroundings.

What’s been your highlight whilst studying at Swansea University?

Travelling all over Wales to visit my placement departments. From staying locally in the Gower, to travelling up to Rhyl and Anglesea, Abergavenny across to Haverford West; I loved exploring the Welsh landscapes and making the most of my experience.

What are your plans/hopes for the future?

I am currently working in Oxford as a Cardiac Physiologist at the John Radcliffe Hospital and hope to specialise my career within the pacing field. I hope to assist in the large volumes of research studies we have ongoing to develop the best techniques and treatments for patients and perhaps even teach in the future.

How will your studies help you pursue your chosen profession?

Without my degree I would not be able to practice as a Cardiac Physiologist. My degree has provided me with a solid foundation to extend my knowledge and develop into a specialised practitioner providing high levels of patient centred care.

Would you recommend Swansea University to other students?

Yes, I have had a wonderful experience at Swansea University. I felt that throughout my experience there was always a support network to use or advice to be taken if you required it. There were lots of opportunities to get involved in activities and the surrounding area is stunning.
