Course Overview

The DipHE in Enhanced Professional Practice is an academic award developed to enable health care practitioners undertaking work-based learning and practice development to gain academic credit for their learning.

  • This is a work-based modular DipHE programme which comprises level 1 study only.
  • This part-time programme is flexible and students can study a maximum of 60 credits per year and complete in 2 years or can opt for fewer credits per year and complete in a maximum time of 4 years.
  • Most students will be in full-time employment and this programme allows them to undertake studies whilst they are working.

The diploma will be delivered using blended learning including work-based learning and attendance at taught modules if the student chooses. The first module ‘Starting Your Practice Development’ will comprise taught days in the College. Subsequent modules will either be existing taught modules from the College's Postgraduate and Continuing Professional Development prospectus with established assessment methods or work-based modules which will be assessed by portfolio. For the work-based modules students will, in conjunction with a practice facilitator and personal tutor, develop learning contracts which will be aimed at meeting the learning requirements for the module and practice development needs in their practice areas.

Within this programme, students have to be responsible for the organisation and recognition of their own learning, be it work-based learning modules or traditional Continuing Personal and Professional Development (CPPD) modules, with the support of their facilitator and personal tutor.

Students, in the main, will probably utilise self-directed learning approaches but can, if appropriate, access some formal teaching offered by their employer or the College of Human and Health Sciences, Swansea University. Students will be registered with the University so will be able to access all learning resources available to students of the University. E-learning will be used when appropriate, although a dedicated blackboard site will be established.

Entry Requirements

This is a work-based modular DipHE programme which comprises level 1 study only.

Entry to the programme is with the module ‘Starting Your Practice Development’ and subsequent module selection will be dependent on the development needs and practice interests of the student. To be awarded the DipHE Enhanced Practice in Health Care, the student must achieve 120 credit points at Level 1 which must include the 2 core modules.

Delivery of this programme is a tripartite arrangement between the student, personal tutor (University based), and practice facilitator (work place based). The practice facilitator will be nominated by the student prior to commencement of the programme. This should be a professional individual with an awareness of the student’s role and responsibilities within the practice setting and an understanding of work based learning.

Therefore students must be employed in an area where there is commitment to work-based learning. Learning for each work-based module is based on the development of a learning contract, in negotiation with tutor and practice facilitator, and consequently the following process will be adopted for each module.

In keeping with the WBL philosophy it is recognised that some students will be able to demonstrate achievement of module learning outcomes through their current work practices without having to complete the actual module. Students in this position who may wish to apply for accreditation of experiential learning against any of the programme modules will be able to do so through the completion of designated APeL modules.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

Important Information for 2018/19: The Welsh Government has recently issued a statement (July 2017) outlining intentions to increase the maximum tuition fee in 2018/19 for full-time undergraduate degree programmes in line with inflation. This may mean the maximum tuition fee for 2018/19 could be set to increase from £9,000 to £9,295 per annum. If the Welsh Government passes this update to The Higher Education (Amounts) (Wales) Regulations 2015 later in the year, the University will apply to the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) to increase its maximum fee level to £9,295 subject to satisfactory approval of a variation to the 2018/19 Fee & Access plan. If approved by HEFCW, the University will immediately write to all students affected notifying them of this fee increase as soon as is practically possible.

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.
