The Director’s Office provides high-level administration across the department, ensuring professional and quality office procedures are in place. The office strategically ensures the financial requirements of the University are being professionally managed and communicated on behalf of the Director with adherence to key trigger points and milestones. It leads the HR processes and systems including performance enabling and operates alongside all professional services departments regarding the University’s core values.
Catherine Marks, Director
Catherine Marks established the Department in 2002 and has overseen its growth and development to create a vibrant marketing culture across the University working in global, regional and local markets.
There is now a dedicated central team of some 100 plus professionally line managed staff working in the key areas of Admissions, Alumni, Business Marketing, Front of House, Fundraising and Development, Internationalisation, Marketing, PR & Communications, Recruitment, Sport and Corporate Events.
This central marketing effort is complemented by work in Colleges, Departments and on projects ensuring the impact of Swansea University in all communities.
Catherine graduated in Economics from Bangor University and undertook her Masters in International Marketing at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne. She has worked in the commercial company of the University of Edinburgh and in PR and Marketing with the Police, UWCN and the Audit Commission.
She is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Marketing and founding member of the CIM HE Group. In her spare time Catherine volunteers as Crew for Ferryside Inshore Lifeboat.
Emma Frearson-Emmanuel, Associate Director, GA
Emma’s role is primarily to provide direction across the University on student recruitment, admissions and internationalisation. Emma has held various international roles within the University which have given her a breadth and depth of experience in study and work abroad, international recruitment and marketing, and programme development. Her other roles include engagement with Arts and Change Management.
Elizabeth Shouaib, Executive Manager, Director’s Office
Liz is a founder member of Global Advancement and manages the Director’s Office which has significantly grown since the department was first set up in 2002. Her role includes establishing and developing the Front of House service provision across the University, VIP relationship management and taking a lead role with Honorary Fellows together with supporting corporate events.
She has many years’ administrative experience in both academic and professional services departments including the Registrar and Pro-Vice-Chancellor’s offices.
Vanessa Walters, Front of House senior administrative assistant
Vanessa joined Global Advancement in April 2015 as the Front of House Senior Administrator supporting the development of the front facing public areas at Fulton House and Singleton Abbey. Since joining the team, her role has grown significantly with the recent addition of The Great Hall box office and the University switchboard.
Vanessa leads and manages a team of 15 student ambassadors and 3 staff to ensure they provide consistent excellent customer service. Her role also includes supporting service excellence developments for the University, staff development and training, merchandise sales and liaising with staff and clients for events.
Samantha Rees, Personal Assistant to the Director
Samantha provides an organisational and administration management service to the Director and Central Marketing office. Joining the department in 2008, she has many years’ experience working in Secretarial and Personal Assistant roles in both the health and education sectors.
Cathy James, Clerical Assistant
Cathy works part-time in the Director’s office and is responsible for maintaining the absence management system within the department. She also manages all sickness records and produces information such as contact lists and organisational charts for the use of Global Advancement staff.
Sue Raddon, Clerical Assistant
Sue recently joined Global Advancement and provides administrative support to the Director and Associate Director.
