Swansea University's Welsh Language Scheme approved

Swansea University’s latest Welsh Language Scheme has been approved by The Welsh Language Board.

The Scheme outlines how the University will ensure the Welsh language is treated equally to English, as well as steps it will take to promote and encourage the use of Welsh among students, staff, and the public.

The University is required to produce a Welsh Language Scheme in accordance with the Welsh Language Act of 1993. Swansea University’s original Language Scheme was approved in 2004.

One of Swansea University's strategic goals is to enhance its bilingual culture and expand Welsh medium provision for students. The Scheme sets out how it will take this forward detailing plans, policies, targets, and methods of monitoring progress.

Vice-Chancellor of Swansea University, Professor Richard B. Davies said:

“ Swansea University is international in its outlook but its Welsh heritage is also an important part of its identity. The Welsh Language Scheme reflects the fact that the University is a bilingual institution in Wales.

" We have recently established Academi Hywel Teifi to develop and promote Welsh medium study and scholarship, and this demonstrates Swansea University’s commitment to promoting and developing the language.

" The Scheme further strengthens this message and explains to staff, students, and the public, how the Welsh language is used within the University.”

The Welsh Language Scheme is available on the Swansea University website:

There will be a number of events to raise awareness of the Scheme over the coming months.
