A Swansea University academic has been elected as an associate fellow in the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA) which is the principal society of aerospace engineers and scientists.

Professor Sondipon AdhikariProfessor Sondipon Adhikari, Chair of Aerospace Engineering in the College of Engineering is among the two fellows elected this year from the UK. To be selected for the grade of Associate Fellow an individual must be an AIAA Senior Member with at least twelve years professional experience, and be recommended by a minimum of three current Associate Fellows.

Professor Adhikari joined the College of Engineering in 2007. He is currently Royal Society’s Wolfson research merit award holder (2010-2015). His research areas are multidisciplinary in nature and include uncertainty quantification in computational mechanics, bio & nanomechanics (nanotubes, graphene, nano-bio sensors), dynamics of complex systems, inverse problems for linear and non-linear dynamics and vibration energy harvesting.

He has published more than 160 peer reviewed journal papers and more than 100 conference papers in these areas and made significant contributions in the general multidisciplinary area of probabilistic engineering mechanics. He is a member of the AIAA Non-Deterministic Approaches Technical Committee (NDA-TC).

Speaking about his delight at being chosen as an Associate Fellow of AIAA, Professor Adhikari said: “I am extremely delighted and honoured to have been elected as a foreign Associate Fellow of AIAA. This is a recognition of the works in the area of aerospace engineering going on in the College of Engineering.”
