Swansea University’s MSc Health Informatics teaching team, based within the College of Medicine, are working with the Open University and the NHS Wales Informatics Service (NWIS) to provide a specially designed informatics module on a new Open University Combined Studies Programme.

The module is aimed at employees within the NHS who are new to informatics, or need to raise their level of awareness of informatics in the workplace and beyond.

In a move away from more traditional teaching methods, the module is delivered mostly by distance learning over a period of six months, and students have minimal attendance requirements, making it easier to combine both work and study.

The module will incorporate a pathway that follows a typical patient ‘journey’ along a healthcare route, encompassing encounters with both primary and secondary care.

Students will learn about some of the key informatics themes including health informatics systems used in primary and secondary care, electronic patient records, telehealth and telecare, and clinical coding.

Tony Paget, Course Director for the Health Informatics Taught Masters Programme, College of Medicine, said: “It is hoped that this module will be the start of a productive relationship with the Open University and NWIS will contribute to the expanding portfolio of courses being developed by Swansea University’s Health Informatics team.”
