The EIB announced in September 2012 that it was providing £60m funding for Swansea University’s campus development programme, including the new £450m Bay Campus, which will be home to the College of Engineering and School of Management.

The Vice-Chancellor said: “This massive campus development by is the largest university-led knowledge economy project in the UK and one of the best in Europe. It would not have been possible without funding support by the EIB and, perhaps even more importantly, the thorough and comprehensive due diligence exercise undertaken by the EIB.  The positive results of this exercise gave the other funders the confidence that Swansea had the academic strengths, support of industry, and management competence to deliver on the proposed scale.  The EIB demolished the argument that the project was “too big for Wales”. I am delighted to be able to show the EIB’s Vice-President around the site so that he can see first-hand how the building work is progressing.”

The European Investment Bank is the world’s largest lending institution, owned by the 28 European Union member states, and last year provided £4.8 billion for projects across the UK. Jonathan Taylor will also meet First Minister Carwyn Jones and Finance Minister Jane Hutt during his visit to discuss opportunities for increased EIB lending in Wales.
