The University is pleased to support the Mamtez Classic Car Run, an event which has been organised to commemorate the centenary of the First World War Battle of Mametz Woods – Somme (July 1916).

Mametz Woods Classic Car Run - soldiers outside The George imageThe run has already proven to be an attractive event amongst the classic car fraternity but there are a few places remaining.

The cars will leave from the “George” in the Mumbles on the morning of 5th July 2016 and return on the 8th July.

The cars will be displayed en route and the group will attend commemorative events at the battlefield on the 7th.  Thousands of Welsh soldiers were injured or killed during the week-long battle, many from the 13th (Swansea) Welsh Battalion.

It is worth visiting the site to see the photograph (above) of the soldiers lined up in front of “the George”, shortly before departing for France and to read an extract from a poem written by Tom Parton, a soldier who survived the battle.
