Swansea University is to host an event later this month which will challenge their best postgraduate research communicators to present their work in just three minutes.

The Three Minute Thesis (3MT) Competition on Monday 23rd February from 10am until 12pm, followed by lunch and the presentations of prizes, will be free and open to the public and is set to test postgraduate research students from all research disciplines.

Audiences at the event will see the researchers explain their work while sticking to three simple but strict rules:

  • Presentations are strictly limited to 3 minutes
  • Presenters can use a single, static PowerPoint™ slide using a standard 3MT template
  • No other media or props are permitted

The competition has been organised by Development and Training Services (DTS) and the Research Institute for Applied Social Sciences (RIASS).

Professor Nuria Lorenzo-Dus, Academic Director of DTS said: “It’s a challenge, but one well worth the effort.  It gives researchers the chance to take part in a multi-disciplinary research event that will sharpen their presentation skills in order to engage with an audience which is an essential skill for their future career.”

The first prize-winner will be awarded £150 and will go through to Vitae 3MT UK Semi Finals.  The runner up will receive £100, while the third prize winner will receive £50.  The event will be run alongside a post graduate poster competition.

Three minute thesis was developed by the University of Queensland and has caught the scholarly imagination to become a brand that is recognised globally.
