Congratulations go to third year Psychology PhD student Amy Jenkins, who was last night (Thursday, February 25) named as winner of the Cardiff Regional Final of the science communication competition FameLab 2016.

Amy Jenkins - FameLab 2016FameLab aims to find and support the UK's most talented new science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) communicators.

Contestants have just three minutes to convey a scientific concept of their choice and Amy, a student in the University’s Department of Psychology, College of Human and Health Sciences, spoke on the topic of ‘Subjective Cognitive Disorder’ at Techniquest’s After Hours evening.

Amy’s PhD involves the characterisation of subjective cognitive impairment in relation to pre-clinical Alzheimer’s disease, with a focus upon investigating the integrity of attention related processing in this disorder. The aim of her research is to improve the understanding of subjective ageing related changes in memory and cognition.

Amy will now attend the Cheltenham Park Hotel from April 1-3, for a FameLab weekend science communication masterclass, before competing in the next round of the competition to find the UK FameLab 2016 winner.

The UK FameLab 2016 winner will receive £1,000 and up to £750 to spend on a science communication activity.

Each national winner also goes on to compete at the competition’s international final at The Times Cheltenham Science Festival in June 2016, which features more than 25 other contestants from around the world.

Good luck for the next round Amy!
