Part Time Rates for Teaching

Part Time Rates for Teaching

The Part time Employees (Prevention of Less Favourable Treatment) Regulation 2000 dictates that part time staff are entitled to the same pay rates as equivalent full time staff.  If a part timer receives less favourable pay or contractual benefits than a ‘comparable full time worker’ they can make a complaint to an employment tribunal.

To comply with this law in the majority of cases the rates of pay for part time teaching staff will be calculated as follows:

    1. The Human Resources Department in consultation with the relevant Head of College will work out the percentage equivalent of work required over the year as compared to the equivalent full time post of the same type (even if such a post does not exist. This might be the case, for example, where a part time teaching only post is calculated as a proportion of a full-time teaching post and where the latter is non-existent in the particular department). The calculation for the part time percentage equivalent will be recorded on the individual record for future reference. For new posts this would normally be part of the case submitted to the Post Approvals Working Group for approval.

    2. At interview or in discussion prior to appointment the workload, duties and calculation of the percentage of full time will be discussed with applicants.

    3. At the time of appointment the Head of Department and the Human Resources Department will determine an appropriate point on the academic related salary scale based on the nature of the work to be undertaken and the skills and experience required for the position and those of the person to be appointed.

    4. The Human Resources Department will issue a contract of employment based on the part time percentage and salary point agreed. The appointment will be for the whole period continuous through vacation.
