Sam

Swansea University RFU player and Ospreys' back rower Sam Lewis from Mumbles has been shortlisted for the LV =Breakthrough Player Award.

The Award is designed to recognise the wealth of impressive young talent on show in this year's LV= Cup and is voted for by rugby supporters on the LV= rugby website.

The LV= Cup, is a 16-team competition involving the 12 English Premiership clubs and four top Welsh Regions and managed by the Rugby Football Union.

The selection process consisted of analysing the performances of every under-23 player in each round of the competition and two players from each round, along with two players who have outstanding overall competition statistics have formed the shortlist.

Sam Lewis was one of the first two players to qualify for the shortlist, after outstanding performances in the first round.

Rugby has always been a part of the Lewis household as Sam’s father, Roy played prop for Swansea and Neath and brother Ben only recently retired from the game due to injury.

Richard Lancaster, Swansea University Head Coach said: “We are very proud of Sam here at the University as he’s a player who sees the importance of a dual career path and is pursuing a sport science degree whilst also balancing the incredible demands on his time for training and competing in professional sport. As one of our University Sporting Scholars he is a role model to aspiring student athletes across the university.

The player with the highest number of votes will receive the LV Breakthrough Player trophy and LV= will donate £1,000 to a grassroots rugby initiative of their choice.

The LV =Breakthrough Player Award will be announced shortly after voting closes at 11.59pm on Sunday 10 March.
