FIFTY young researchers working on offshore renewable energy met recently to exchange ideas with help from Swansea University.

INORE1The International Network on Offshore Renewable Energy (INORE) is a global online forum for researchers in the early stages of their career.

Once a year, INORE members meet to present their work and learn about renewable energy around the world, with particular emphasis on where the symposium is held.

In May, 50 INORE members met in Pembrokeshire for a week of keynote speeches, presentations, collaborative tasks and networking events.

Swansea University provided financial support for this 2013 symposium which highlighted Wales as a globally significant renewable energy location.

It is hoped the event will improve global economic interest in the area.

INORE2The university's College of Engineering has a dedicated team of research staff based in the Marine Energy Research Group (MERG) as part of the Low-Carbon Research Institute (LCRI) working with academic, industrial, governmental and environmental groups from around the Welsh Coast.

Research carried out by the group was presented to the symposium along with news on exciting developments and activities in the Welsh Renewables sector.

As a non-profit organisation, INORE is run by the young researchers themselves and relies on sponsorship from industry, government and academia.

Professor Ian Cluckie, Swansea University Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Science and Engineering), helped to secure the funding for the event which was organised by assistant researcher Hannah Buckland of the MREG and vice-chair if INORE.
