Beyond Cultural Relativism: The Evolving Human Rights Mechanism of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in Context. The second annual conference will be held at Swansea University on Friday, May 1.

The ASEAN Human Rights Declaration of November 2012 represents the latest stage in the development of the human rights mechanism of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), following the establishment of the ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights in 2009. This conference explores the ASEAN human rights mechanism almost six years on from its establishment and the broader state of human rights in South-East Asia. It considers the ways in which the mechanism is likely to change in the coming years as a result of programmed developments within ASEAN and its relationship to global mechanisms for the promotion of protection of universal human rights. Bringing together academics and policy-makers from the UK and from Southeast Asia, it is the second of three annual conferences to be held in Swansea between 2014 and 2016 tracing the evolution of the ASEAN human rights mechanism.
