Swansea University is this week celebrating a raft of successes in the world and UK higher education rankings.

It continues to be recognised as one of the top universities in the UK and the world in the Complete University Guide, the QS World University Rankings by Subject and the WhatUni Student Choice Awards.

Swansea is already listed in the top 500 universities in the world in the overall QS World University Rankings 2014/15, putting it in the top 5% globally.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2015 published today (29 April), show that Swansea continues to do well globally in three leading subjects:  Civil & Structural Engineering (top 200), Mechanical, Aeronautical & Manufacturing (top 250) and Mathematics (top 300). In previous years English Language and Literature, Geography, Law and Legal Studies, Environmental Studies and Linguistics have featured in the rankings.

In the Complete University Guide 2016, which came out on Monday (27 April), Swansea University was ranked 45th out of 126 universities in the UK. Swansea appears among the top 10 universities in seven of its 40 subjects included in the listings.

Another area in the Guide where Swansea excels is producing high calibre, global graduates that are attractive to potential employers as evidenced by our continued top 20 ranking for Graduate Prospects.

In addition, when ranked by Research Quality, Swansea University has once again been recognised as a top 30 research institution with an impressive ranking of 24th in the UK - up 23 places on last year, highlighting the quality, scale and impact of our world leading research.

This expertise in research has been recognised by the Higher Education Funding Council for England which recently asked Swansea University to join an elite group of 20 universities advising HEFCE on Research Excellence in the fields of English Language and Literature in the UK-wide Research Excellence Framework.

Swansea University was the 2014 WhatUni “University of the Year” and last week it again hit the heights in the contest, coming third in the overall UK ranking and being shortlisted in seven categories – Overall University, Courses, Uni Facilities, City Life, Student Support, Students’ Union and Clubs and Societies. To have been recognised by so many students in these major categories is a major reflection of our devotion to the excellence of the teaching and support which we provide to our students.

The University recently received another Athena Swan Bronze Award for the College of Science so all five areas in Science are covered – almost all of its STEMM subjects. The awards recognise efforts to encourage women to study Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine.

Swansea is also the only university in the UK to have won Times Higher Education Leadership and Management Awards (THELMAs) for the last three years and it has been shortlisted again in 2015 in the Outstanding International Strategy and Knowledge Exchange/Transfer Initiative of the Year categories.

Professor Hilary Lappin-Scott, Swansea University Pro-Vice-Chancellor, said:

“Swansea University is today celebrating a week of successes in the world and UK higher education rankings. Being ranked overall in the top 5% of universities in the world and the top 30 research institutions in the UK is a major reflection of the hard work and dedication which we have put into improving the design and delivery of our teaching and research.

“Our University is continuing to score particularly high on graduate job prospects, where we are in the top 20 in the UK and undergraduate applications have been rising continually over the last three years.

“This continued success is a recognisable measure of our performance and reputation. It shows that as an ambitious, research-led institution with top quality teaching and top level student experience, Swansea is an excellent place to study for UK, EU and International students.”
