Dr Lloyd Bridge, a Lecturer in Mathematics at Swansea University, is attending Parliament to present his mathematical research to a range of politicians and a panel of expert judges, as part of the SET for BRITAIN event on Monday 7th March.

Lloyd’s poster, which presents new mathematical models of the processes involved in plant water use and cooling, will be judged against dozens of other mathematicians’ research in the only national competition of its kind.

On presenting his research in Parliament, Lloyd said “SET for BRITAIN provides an exciting opportunity and forum for presenting this new mathematical biology research to an audience with wide ranging interests and backgrounds. Water use is a priority area in plant science, particularly with regard to the increased temperatures associated with climate change, and mathematical modelling plays an important role towards understanding temperature effects on leaf cooling. This work has potential for impact in food security and crops research, and I look forward to discussing these directions with Members of Parliament”.

Lloyd’s research has been entered into the Mathematics session of the competition, which will end in a gold, silver and bronze prize-giving ceremony. Judged by leading academics, the gold medallist receives £3,000, while silver and bronze receive £2,000 and £1,000 respectively.

The Parliamentary and Scientific Committee run the event in collaboration with the Council for Mathematical Sciences, the Institute of Physics, The Physiological Society, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Royal Society of Chemistry, the Royal Society of Biology and the Society of Chemical Industry, with financial support from the Clay Mathematics Institute, Essar, INEOS, Warwick Manufacturing Group (WMG), Wiley, the Bank of England and the Institute of Biomedical Science.
