In July, members of the Tree Ring Research Group, Department of Geography, took part in the BBC’s Gardeners’ Question Time Annual Garden Party, which was held this year at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthenshire.

GQTThe team (Danny McCarroll, Neil Loader & Darren Davies) were on hand to discuss all aspects of trees and tree ring research with visitors to the Garden and presented their latest results on the study of climatic change and new dating techniques in archaeology.

More than 1,400 visitors attended the event from across the United Kingdom.

The group are currently working with the Botanic Garden to study wood formation in old-growth oak trees; with Oxford University to advance tree ring dating techniques (supported by the Leverhulme Trust); and with the Birmingham Institute of Forest Research to provide baseline dendrological data in support of a £19M experiment to investigate how forests will respond to increased levels of carbon dioxide.

They also regularly offer “Week of Work” and SPIN work experience placements to students interested in the study of past environmental change.
