Laboratory used for the preparation and sub-sampling of recently collected sediment samples
CECIL 6000 Series Spectrophotometer
An instrument for measuring light intensity, that can measure intensity as a function of the light source wavelength. Useful in the fields of material science, biochemistry, chemistry and molecular biology.
Coulter Laser Particle Analyser Micromeritics Sedigraph (X-Ray Particle Analyser)
These two pieces of equipment are used for accurate particle size distribution determination following sample pre-treatment. The Sedigraph is preferred when extremely accurate measurements of percentage clay are required, while the Coulter Analyser is more flexible, and may be used on both dry and wet sediments of varied sizes and sources.
Stable Isotope Ratio Analysis (PDZ Europa)
Segmented Flow Nutrient Analyser
Used for the accurate detection and measurement of trace inorganic nutrients in a wide range of natural water samples. Typically, analysis includes ammonia, phosphate, silicate, nitrate and nitrite, Dissolved Organic Carbon, Dissolved Inorganic carbon, Total Oxidised Nitrogen, Total Dissolved Phosphorus.
Easy Drop – Goniometer
The Goniometer is used to measure surface tension in hydrophobicity studies
Various types of microscopes
Microscopes may be used to investigate sediment source, or for more analytical studies, such as relative dating methods using tephra, counting pollen to detect changes in vegetation cover, or to count charcoal fragments to investigate fire frequency.
Dionex 200 Accelerated Solvent Extractor – Organic Compounds; Gas Chromatographer – Mass Spectrometer (GC/MS Agilent) (pictured)
Recovery of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, polychlorinated biphenyls, and total petroleum hydrocarbons from sediment samples
Extremely accurate weighing (thousandth of a µg) of small samples for isotopic or carbon analysis
Used for the quantification and identification of trace organic compounds (typically extracted using the accelerated solvent extractor.
To determine organic carbon, charcoal and carbonate contents on larger samples (3-5g)
Portable X-Ray Fluorescence analyser
Used for rapid determination of elemental concentrations (from Mg to U), with a detection range extending from a high total percentage, down to parts per million.
Hitatchi Auto-sampler AS-400
Analysis of water samples to determine chemical composition.
Waltz Phyto-Pam Phytoplankton Analyser
Determine the content of active chlorophyll in natural waters and also differentiate between differently pigmented groups of algae (green algae, diatoms and cyanobacteria).
The photosynthetic performance and light-adaptational state of the various types of phytoplankton can be assessed.
Thermo savant freeze drier
Applies a vacuum at extremely low temperatures (-60oC) to gently remove water from samples
Apollo SciTech Alkalinity Test Kit
Alkalinity testing of seawater and freshwater samples.
Preparation of samples for further analysis: e.g. Acid extraction of heavy metals, preparing peats to determine level of humification, or extracting pollen and tephra for microscope analysis.
Measures the heat released or absorbed during a chemical reaction, determines the potential energy of organic substances.
Automated titrino plus
Compact titrator for dynamic and monotonic titrations with automatic equivalence point recognition as well as endpoint titrations.
Primacs Solid Sample TOC Analyzer
Allows fast and accurate analysis of Total Carbon by high temperature catalytic combustion at 1050°C
To determine total carbon content on minute samples (10-12 µg), with extremely high accuracy
Hand held Spectrophotometer DS/2500 VIS for nutrient analysis
Analysis for Salinity and pH Analysis for Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate, Alkalinity
Frantz Model Magnetic Separator
Separates dry granular materials according to their magnetic susceptibilities
Microwave Digestion MARSX
