Athena SWAN at SoM

The School of Management is committed to ensuring gender equality in the workplace and is currently working towards submitting for an Athena SWAN Bronze award.

The Equality Challenge Unit established the Athena SWAN Charter in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in STEMM employment in higher education and research.

In May 2015 the charter was expanded to recognise work undertaken in arts, humanities, social sciences, business and law (AHSSBL), and in professional and support roles, and for trans staff and students. The charter now recognises work undertaken to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.

Swansea University Staff Culture Survey

The Swansea University Staff Culture Survey is now live. This is your opportunity to have your say on workplace culture (i.e. attitudes and behaviour at work) and to be in with a chance of winning your choice of either a dedicated car parking space for a period of 6 months (you will be required to hold a valid car parking permit) or a £100 retail gift voucher.

In order for the university to keep progressing, it is vital that we understand the opinions and experiences of our most important resource, our staff. This biennial survey will be used to monitor change, especially linked to Athena SWAN, Race Equality Charter Mark and Stonewall Workplace Equality initiatives.

This survey is applicable to ALL staff and will take around 15 minutes to complete.

The deadline for completion is Friday 2nd February. Please do take the time to complete this survey as the information provided will be vital for gaining a better understanding of your experiences and perspectives in order to support and influence positive change.

Please note: this data will be held in the strictest of confidence, and responses will only be seen in a raw format by the Equality Team and myself as Chair of the Athena SWAN Self-Assessment Team. Identifiable information will not be disclosed; responses are anonymised and the findings from the survey will be presented to staff as aggregated data. No responses will be attributed to any individual.

I have taught and researched diversity for many years, yet in my personal experience of working in both commercial and academic environments I have often found these issues are given lip-service and difficult conversations are avoided.  I got involved in our Athena Swan activity as soon as I joined the School in January, am passionate about ensuring we build on what we do well, and want to ensure we are not afraid to highlight and address that which needs to change.

I have a long-standing interest in equality issues and have been an active researcher across multiple dimensions of equality for the past 20 years. Much of my early career was spent exploring the economics of discrimination based upon ethnicity, gender and disability and more recently I have also been examining the role that sexual orientation has to play. I have served upon University Committees monitoring the outcomes and position of BME employees and have published commissioned work in the public policy arena for the likes of the DfEE (providing a benchmark for the introduction of the 1995 Disability Discrimination Act) and Equal Opportunities Commission (examining the barriers faced by women in senior management in Wales).

I have a long-standing commitment to equality and diversity in academia and in society. I have written extensively on gender inequality in the academy and on the ways in which leisure practices reflect social inequalities, based on gender, disability, socio-economic status, etc. I have sat on university gender pay gap task & finish groups, Investors in People accreditation delivery teams and have held roles with significant responsibility for equality, including Head of Department, Interim Head of School and School Director of Staff Development.

Upcoming events

  • Wikipedia edit-a-thon - 28th February 2018

    Swansea University is due to run a Wikipedia edit-a -thon! Students, staff and alumni are invited to take part in a Wikipedia edit-a-thon aimed at raising the visibility of inspiring women and celebrating their achievements. No experience necessary full training on editing Wikipedia will be given. Editors are welcomed to contribute in any language – whether creating new content or translating from other languages.

LGBT History Month

LGBT History Month: February 2018

LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) History Month takes place every year in February, and celebrates the lives and achievements of the LGBT community.

The LGBT+ Staff Network will recognise this by holding a range of events, which are open to all staff, students and visitors:

Information stalls: 1st February, 12.30 – 1.30pm, Fulton House foyer (Singleton) and Engineering Reception (Bay).

LGBT Storytelling Evening: Friday 16th February, 7.30 – 10.30pm, Mozarts Swansea.
Come along to our night of LGBT themed stories, share your own story at our open mic, and listen to music by local LGBT artists. A fun, friendly evening, a chance to be entertained, and to come together to celebrate ourselves, our history, and our lives.

Film Screening of ‘Battle of the Sexes’: Tuesday 20th February, 7.30pm, Taliesin Arts Centre
The 1973 tennis match between women's World number 1 Billie Jean King (Emma Stone) and ex-men's champion and self-proclaimed sexist, Bobby Riggs (Steve Carell)  was billed as the BATTLE OF THE SEXES and became one of the most watched sports events of the decade. This film charts a significant event in LGBT history and represents the ongoing challenge of sexism in media, sports, and public life.

Combating Gender and Sexuality Stereotyping Seminar: Tuesday 27th February, 1 – 2pm, Glyndwr 231.

This thought-provoking, dynamic session raising awareness of the impact of stereotyping, and identifies simple ways to combat this in professional and personal life.

Queer Welsh History Exhibition: throughout February, National Waterfront Museum
This exhibition includes artefacts from famous (and not so famous) LGBT people connected to Swansea, and explores the lessons from our past we can carry forward into our future activism.

Featuring book, film and other media reviews, stories, reflections and reports on aspects of LGBT+ history and life, the blog series invites you to read and enjoy, learn and discover.  We welcome contributions and comments.
