I am an Associate Professor in Nursing at the Department of Nursing, Swansea University and an Associate Member of the Centre for Innovative Ageing. My academic grounding in social and political sciences and clinical background in specialist palliative care underpin my research and teaching.
Presently I am the Director for the multiprofessional MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management Programme. From 2003-2009 I was the Programme Director for undergraduate nursing (BN – all fields) at Swansea University. I also led the development, implementation and ran the first BSc Cancer Care and BSc Palliative Care (with spq) at Swansea University.
My research expertise lies in qualitative research. I have a particular interest in the boundaries between palliative and end-of-life care. My current research relates to aspects of palliative and end of life care and cancer rehabilitation. I am an invited reviewer for NIHR Research for Patient Benefit grant applications. I supervise a number of PhD students and am interested in PhD applications using qualitative methodology and relating to palliative and end of life care, chronic illness, nursing and Interprofessional education.
I am an editorial board member for the Journal Nurse Education in Practice, an invited convenor for the annual international Networking for Education in Practice Conference and a regular reviewer for a number of international academic journals.

Teaching

  • SHDM11 Planning Research in Professional Practice

    This is core module for the Doctorate in Professional Practice. It offers students the opportunity to reflect critically on their own practice, identify research questions and design a proposal to conduct practitioner research within their own workplace. This module will also cover important aspects of research ethics and research governance with a focus on their own research based projects and applying for ethical approval.

  • SHHM06 The Social Aspects of Long Term and Chronic Illness

    Students will be enabled to consider the social aspects of long term and chronic illness to gain understanding of the effects on the individual and society. The module will provide an opportunity to learn about the lived experiences of people, throughout the life course, whose lives are affected by long term and chronic illness. Consideration will be given also to the study of carers¿ experiences, examining their role and how their needs may be met. The module will focus on aspects of long term and chronic condition management that are overlooked in bio-medical approaches by examining in detail how people make sense of and cope with long term and chronic illness. It will also encourage practitioners to critically evaluate the delivery of care to patients with long term and chronic conditions and their carers within its strategic framework.

  • SHHM15 Data Collection Methods

    This module aims to provide students with an overview of the range of data collection methods available to individuals undertaking research and to enable the student to consider the implications, application strengths and weaknesses of the various data collection methods. The module will also provide insight into the ways that such methods may be applied effectively and ethically in social research.

  • SHHM54 Care Decisions for the Last Days of Life

    This interprofessional module aims to prepare health professionals working in hospital settings to utilise the All Wales Care Decisions Tool for the Last Days of Life. Specifically it aims to equip health professionals with the knowledge, skills and understanding to provide effective collaborative care and support for people in the last days of life and their families.

  • SHVM47 Dissertation - Chronic Conditions Management

    This module builds upon the knowledge and skills developed in part one of the programme. Specifically, students will be prepared to work independently in order to critically explore the evidence base for a topic of relevance to their own professional practice.

  • SHVM51 Theory and Practice of Long Term and Chronic Conditions Management

    This module enables students to critically examine the theories, models, concepts and practice of long term and chronic conditions management in the context of interdisciplinary practice and collaborative working with people with long term and chronic illnesses and their families.

It hosts the Older People and Ageing Research & Development Network, and the Wales Stroke Research Interest Group and has strong links with Wales Dementias and Neurodegenerative Diseases Research Network (NEURODEM Cymru).
