The module aims to provide an introduction to the way in which psychologists study human behaviour. Students will be introduced to the dominant theoretical approaches within Psychology in order to understand how each approach studies and explains behaviour differently. Students will then apply this knowledge about the different theoretical approaches to evaluate how each approach explains and treats various mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours. Students will learn some of the key principles of behaviour analysis and how they can be applied to behavioural medicine. Students will attend two tutorials that will provide an introduction to the difficulties and controversies surrounding the mental health conditions covered in the lectures, and the ethical challenges surrounding the facilitation of behaviour change. Tutorial one will involve discussion of how and why we diagnose mental health conditions and some of the controversy surrounding the DSM-V. Tutorial two will involve the ethical considerations of utilising punishment to facilitate behaviour change.
This module will build upon knowledge acquired in PM137 Introduction to Medical Psychology with regard to mental health (depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviours) by exploring contemporary research into the causes and treatment of these conditions. Students will learn about third wave psychological intervention (such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy,Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction) as a way of treating mental health problems. Students will consider some of the current debates surrounding diagnosis of mental health problems. In this module students will be introduced to the field of Health Psychology including some key models of health behaviour, psychological aspects of illness (for example the doctor-patient relationship, non-compliance with treatment), psychological aspects of pain, and psychological aspects of stress.
This module will explore the various approaches to diagnose Autism and related conditions from the medical, social and educational aspects. It will build upon the neurobiology involved in Autism, evaluate different assessment techniques and related them to the Statement of Need process. It will further explore the evidence base for the various diagnostic and assessment procedures in relation to service provision and planning.
This module will explore the history of autism to inform how people lived with autism (including parents and carers) previously to the present day, debate the use of diet controls, critically review the impact of autism (pre- and post- diagnosis) upon the individual and family, explore the issue of parental stress, discuss how our understanding of the impact of autism can have an input into service planning and delivery, appraising integrated services and the influence of policy changes on the support provided (clinically, socially and educationally).
This module will explore the use of home based educational interventions to support the development of people with Autism and how these approaches could be incorporated within the clinical and social care services as part of an overall integrated management strategy. Additionally, this module will discuss how you can involve parents and caregivers in a supportive role for the management of Autism.
This module will introduce students to the concepts involved in the normal and abnormal development of the brain in terms of the physiological and psychological aspects. Additionally, it will explore how altered neurodevelopment is often described as a component of the behavioral aspects of Autism presentation. Furthermore, students will be introduced to the theoretical concepts of Behavioral Analysis and its role in the management of Autism.
This module will allow students to review, appraise and evaluate the application of the knowledge gained throughout the programme within their own professional work environment by providing a portfolio of evidence that is supported by a reflective commentary.
This module builds on the knowledge and skills developed in teaching components in part one of their relevent programme. Students will work independently in order to critically explore and add to the evidence base for a topic of relevance to their area of study.
