Working together to reduce, reuse and recycle our waste

Minimising waste production, increasing reuse and segregating waste for closed loop recycling supports the circular economy.  As such, waste minimisation and resource efficiency is one of the key operational focuses of the University’s Sustainability and Climate Emergency Strategy 2021-2025.

We are committed to improving our practices, year on year, and as such underwent a rigorous independent audit carried out by the Carbon Trust, in October 2022 to assess all our waste streams (over 40) to ensure none of the University’s waste reaches landfill. After a 6 months review process of over 40 waste streams, and over 6 waste management suppliers, we are proud to announce Swansea University is a ZERO Waste to Landfill University.

Producing a wide range of non-hazardous and hazardous controlled waste means that we manage our waste in accordance with the Waste Framework Directive and operate within the requirements of all relevant waste legislation and within the remit of the Waste Hierarchy.
