BSc Applied Medical Sciences (with a Foundation Year)

Course Overview

Applied Medical Sciences is the science that underpins medicine.It provides the ideal springboard for careers in research and innovation as well as further study such as Graduate Entry Medicine.

The Applied Medical Sciences Foundation Programme will introduce you to the study of Medical Sciences, developing the concepts and knowledge required to progress to Year 1 of the BSc Applied Medical Sciences programme. It is aimed at students whose A Level choices or performance would not allow direct entry onto the BSc programme and mature students who wish to re-enter education.

Key Features

During the Foundation Year, students will be introduced to the study of Medical Sciences, taking modules in Foundation Biological Chemistry, Metabolism & Homeostasis, Fundamentals of Microbiology & Disease, Skills Development, Introduction to the human cell, psychology and molecular biology and Foundation to Data Handling & Analysis.

Subject to satisfactory performance (a cumulative module average of at least 60% is required), students progress onto the BSc Applied Medical Sciences programme where modules are designed to build on the content of the Foundation Year, giving students a thorough understanding of the human body and medical science. Students will cover a range of subjects including Anatomy (taught through hands-on, whole-body human dissection), Physiology, Medical Psychology, Molecular & Cell biology, Biochemistry, Immunology and Pharmacology. In addition, specialist modules will allow students to develop the skills required to be a scientist, a life sciences entrepreneur or to apply for a career in the Health professions, including Graduate Entry Medicine, enhancing employability on graduation.

Description

During each year of your degree, you will be required to study 120 credits, made up of compulsory and optional modules.  Learning will be facilitated using an approach that includes lectures, laboratory practicals, independent learning and small groups. Whilst the programme will be academically rigorous, there will be support from personal tutors who are dedicated to helping you succeed in your studies and future career in science and medicine.  

The course has been designed to guide you to a range of relevant careers.  Following solid grounding in fundamental science and core scientific skills in the foundation year (Year 0) and Year 1, Year 2 can focus on research, enterprise and/or medical sciences in practice*.  The final year will allow you to develop independent skills relevant to a range of careers such as postgraduate research, pharmaceuticals, product development and graduate entry medicine. 

A cumulative module average of at least 60% is required for progression from the Foundation Year to Year 1 of the Applied Medical Science BSc Course.

* Progression onto the medical sciences in practice strand is subject to satisfactory performance in the Year 1

Entry Requirements

A typical offer will be BBB - CCC at A Level, ideally including Biology and one other STEM subject (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths, or Psychology).  

Applicants with alternative qualifications should attain equivalent UCAS tariff points (128-96) and will be judged individually on their own merit.

Tuition Fees

Annual tuition fees for entry in the academic year 2018/19 are as follows:

UK/EU International
BSc (Hons) Full-time £9,000 £17,450

Fees for full time Undergraduate UK/EU students may be increased in subsequent years of study by an inflationary amount determined by Welsh Government.

Fees for full time Undergraduate International students will increase by 3% for each subsequent year of study.

Additional Costs

The tuition fees do not cover the costs of purchasing books or stationery, printing, thesis binding or photocopying costs.

You will need to purchase a white lab coat and safety goggles prior to any practical classes.  These can be purchased on arrival at the University.  

Vaccinations

Currently, there are no specific vaccination requirements for students applying to study Applied Medical Sciences or Applied Medical Sciences with a Foundation year. Human cadavers are used in the teaching of Human Anatomy, but the fixing process inactivates potential infective agents and so the exposure to potential infectious agents is considered negligible, as advised by Bristol University, where all our specimens are sourced from. All students are however encouraged to ensure all childhood vaccinations e.g. tetanus, measles etc. are up to date to ensure general health and wellbeing at university.

We continually evaluate the risk posed to students as a result of the practical work which they undertake, and work closely with our Occupational Health Department and Health & Safety Department to ensure student safety is maintained at all times. This is an on-going process, but if ever there were to be a risk we would continue to work according to their protocol for dealing with exposure, which is available to students. As such, this information may be subject to change, but this will be communicated to students and applicants as soon as any such information became available.

As with all our practicals, any student who may be immunocompromised (e.g. have had a recent transplant) or suspect that they are pregnant is asked to inform the Programme Director at their earliest convenience, as this could lead to health problems that we may need to take into consideration during the practical aspects of the programme.

Welsh Language Provision

The Medical School is working toward enhancing and developing their Welsh language provision.

Students Studying Medical Genetics will be given the opportunity to have a Welsh speaking personal tutor, as well as being able to register for the Welsh version of Genetic Analysis 1 (PM-120) in the first year of their studies.
