Student experience at NMSU, USA

Ashleigh spent 1 academic year (2015-2016) studying at the University of New Mexico as part of her American Studies degree at Swansea University. Here are some of the comments she made about her experience:  

New mexico State University

"For the past nine months, I have had the incredible fortune of living in the USA, and more specifically, the state of New Mexico, also known as the Land of Enchantment. While New Mexico may not denote traditional images of skyscrapers and bustling metropolises that are typically associated with the U.S., this is in fact the reason that I adore it." 

 

Personal Development

"With regards to personal development...this study abroad program has wholeheartedly improved my faith in both myself and the many kind people of the world...I am confident that my social skills have developed significantly since my arrival in the United States, as it is a brilliant opportunity to engage with students from all continents and explore their cultures and ways of life.  I have subsequently created international friendships that I will cherish indefinitely."

Biggest Highlights

"This Study Abroad program has enabled me to travel North America excessively, without paying excessive prices. New Mexico is a perfect location in which to experience the South West USA, as incredibly touristic locations surround the state – for example: The Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, and California, yet New Mexico itself is one of the cheapest states in the United States in which to live. My time in New Mexico has allowed me to travel to eleven U.S. states, Canada and Mexico, all of which would not have been possible without the Study Abroad program as offered by Swansea University."

Reflection

"There are only so many places that you can hot air balloon over the coyotes that inhabit the Rio Rancho desert land, or hike the picturesque Sandia mountains under the nationally celebrated New Mexican sunsets...I would zealously encourage every student to embark upon a year abroad, as the overwhelming benefits of such programs are truly perennial."
