A record-breaking sporting scholar
Our sporting scholars continue to excel at their sports, smashing the podiums, and in this case, breaking BUCS records!
On the 23rd -25th of February, our Swansea University swimming team headed to Ponds Forge International Sports Centre in Sheffield to compete in the BUCS Long Course Championship (BUCS Nationals) to take on swimming teams from universities across the UK.
Lewis Fraser, a swimming sports scholar here at Swansea University, took the title at the Men’s 100m Butterfly event on the weekend, and broke the event BUCS record by 0.15s, coming in at 52.62s. The record hadn’t been broken since 2016, when it was taken by a Plymouth University student. Lewis also came away from the competition with a 2nd place medal in the 50m Butterfly event - an incredibly successful weekend.
Lewis was delighted with his achievements telling us:
“I have absolutely loved my last BUCS competition and the team has been incredible. There were hard fought swimming performances all weekend and a great energetic atmosphere in the group. I'm happy with my swims, and there were some good performances, but there are still things to work on before Olympic and British Championship trials.
I want to say a massive thank you to all the Sport Swansea and Swim Wales staff and the swimmers making it one to remember”.
Lewis has had an incredible season, from taking 1st place in both the 100m and 50m Butterfly events in the BUCS Short-Course that took place in November, to representing Great Britain in the U23 European Swimming Championships in Dublin last summer.
