Our new flexible part-time Adult Nursing degree has been developed to meet the needs of the modern student, considering the aspirations of individuals who wish to become registered nurses while recognising that for many, there are challenges with balancing life commitments and study.

A 4-day learning week, shorter periods of study and a hybrid approach of online and on-campus teaching, as well as an increased amount of annual leave and flexibility to manage clinical practice hours across the working week, will help balance your commitments throughout this four-year BSc programme.

Our curriculum has been developed to be responsive to changes in society and health care, and your learning will reflect the public’s expectations of the nursing profession. With 50% of the programme based in a range of clinical and community settings you will develop the skills and experience to deliver safe, compassionate and effective nursing care.

We have excellent working relationships with many healthcare providers, so you will have access to a wide range of clinical experiences across South West Wales. These include placements in the NHS and independent sector in hospitals and community settings.

Our academic staff are qualified nurses, doctors, and allied health professionals, many of whom are also practising clinicians, providing an exceptional combination of theoretical rigour, professional insight, and practical expertise.

We have very strong links with Welsh Health Boards, supporting clinical placement opportunities for you in a variety of settings in both urban and rural locations. Meanwhile, the nearest hospital is right next door to our Singleton Park campus on the edge of the beautiful Gower Peninsula.

Your Adult Nursing Experience

Throughout your studies you will participate in a range of learning activities, combining face-to-face teaching with online study, digital learning and student-centred activities, including:

Discussion groups
Simulation
Lectures
Individual and group personal tutoring
Guided reading and activities
Role-play and case studies
Practice learning
Enquiry-based learning
Skills rehearsal involving patient and carer.

You will have the opportunity to apply to study abroad through a three-month placement with one of our partner universities in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Slovenia, or Sweden.

You can also study part of your nursing degree through the medium of Welsh and may be eligible for internal scholarships or financial support through Coleg Cymraeg Cenedlaethol.

Nursing Careers

On graduation, you will be eligible to apply for Registered Nurse (Adult) status with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and to register as a nurse for work in EU and EEA.

You can expect a starting salary of £28,407 rising to £57,349 for a highly experienced staff nurse. Specialist nurses and practice managers can earn £50,056.

A minimum of 5 grade A-C GCSE passes (or 4 and above) including English/Welsh language, Maths and a Physical Science or Double Science Award.

In certain circumstances, Key Skills Level 2 in Application of Number will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Mathematics and Key Skills Level 2 in Communication will be accepted in lieu of GCSE Welsh/English Language, if undertaken since September 2015.

All applicants will be required to have a satisfactory enhanced disclosure and barring service (DBS) check and occupational health check. Any concerns arising from these may be considered at the School of Health and Social Care’s Professional Suitability and Fitness to Practise Panel and may result in admission to the programme being withdrawn.

How You're Taught

We are proud to provide an outstanding educational experience, using the most effective learning and teaching approaches, carefully tailored to suit the specific needs of your course. Our flexible part-time course offers a hybrid approach combining on-campus learning and online teaching and resources to support your studies.

Practical skills sessions, lab work seminars, and workshops predominantly take place in person, allowing for group working and demonstrations. We also operate virtual labs and Simulated Learning Environments which will facilitate greater access to training opportunities in the future.

Online learning may take place ‘live’ using software such as Zoom, allowing you to interact with the lecturer and other students and to ask questions. Lecture recordings also allow for more flexibility to revisit material, to revise for assessments and to enhance learning outside of the classroom. Some modules have extra resources in Canvas, such as videos, slides and quizzes enabling further flexible study.

We use a variety of methods to assess your learning across all nursing modules including coursework essays, oral and poster presentations, projects, portfolios, multiple choice and unseen examinations, ) Integrated Structured Clinical examinations (ISCEs), and online assessments.

This course may offer some modules taught through the medium of Welsh or bilingually for students who consider themselves to be fluent Welsh speakers. For more details on the provision available see the Welsh Provision expander below.
