In a collaboration between Swansea University's Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences and Brynteg Comprehensive, over 300 pupils and staff descended upon the Bay campus for a day of immersive learning and exploration.

The unique event showcased the dedication of university staff, who joined forces to deliver engaging lectures and workshops, providing a glimpse into the world of higher education.

The day kicked off with two large lectures in the Great Hall, followed by twenty interactive seminars held across the campus. Pupils were exposed to the university environment and higher education teaching through sessions tailored to mirror themes related to their academic and pastoral development.

The first session, led by Dr. Gerad Oram, delved into the historical importance and wartime experiences of South Wales, particularly Swansea. From the blitz to preparations for the D-Day landings, pupils actively engaged in group discussions and debates, assuming the roles of real historians while analysing historical sources.

Dr. Oram expressed his admiration for the students, stating, "I was hugely impressed with the level of knowledge and understanding shown by the students, as well as their willingness to answer questions and suggest solutions."

The second main session, conducted by the University's Enterprise and Engagement team, focused on the importance of enterprise, innovation, and sustainability in the modern economy. Pupils worked collaboratively in small teams during workshops, generating ideas and presenting solutions that aimed to make a positive impact on the world.

Nicola Lane, representing Brynteg's humanities cluster, praised the event, saying, "All our pupils thoroughly enjoyed the day. They were engaged and fully participated in the sessions delivered by the university staff." She highlighted the effectiveness of the resources and the motivation they provided, adding, "Many pupils commented on how impressed they were with the campus and the learning they undertook during the day. Lots of our pupils said that they could not wait to go to Swansea University for real."

The Enterprise Team, thrilled to be part of the event, ran workshops focusing on the formation of new ideas and businesses, the relationship between societal needs, industry, and innovation. Kelly Jordan, Senior Entrepreneurship Officer, expressed her delight, saying, "The students from Brynteg came up with some fantastic ideas in their breakout sessions, which focused on coming up with a product that they felt was needed."

This initiative not only provided Brynteg pupils with a memorable introduction to university life but also fostered creativity, critical thinking, and a deeper understanding of historical and contemporary issues. Swansea University continues to pave the way for innovative educational experiences, leaving a lasting impact on the next generation of learners.
