Student presenting

Academic staff in the Accounting and Finance department have been encouraging School of Management students to participate in a Trading competition, building on the success of previous years.

The main aims of this ‘Hedge Fund’ competition are to develop students’ professional and academic skills whilst enhancing research-led and practice-driven learning. This is a team-based competition open to all students – undergraduate and postgraduate - studying at the School of Management, not just those on the Accounting and Finance programmes.

Lecturer in Finance, Joy Jia explained, ‘We hoped this competition adds value to participants’ CVs and we’re delighted with the number of students who have taken part despite the restrictions imposed during this period.’

More specifically, the competition is planned to create the following learning outcomes:

  • Critically review and apply relevant theories and studies in investment practice;
  • Research/practice proposal writing;
  • Development of self and professional awareness;
  • Enhance a wide range of professional skills such as teamwork, peer mentoring, time management, presentation and interview skills;
  • Personal skills including networking with professionals and peers;
  • Promote digital culture.

Seven teams, with a total of twenty students, completed the project, with lecturers Giulia Fantini and Joy Jia presenting a number of workshops via Zoom to prepare and support participants before the final proposal submission.

The School of Management was joined by Russell Barlow, Global Head of Alternative Investment Strategies at Aberdeen Standard Investments, and his colleague Vicky Hudson, a Senior Investment Manager, who assisted in the marking of the proposals.

We were also joined by Rui Jin Chief Operating Officer of Haitong International (UK) Limited.  They shared their career stories with our students, providing advice on the recruitment process into the profession, and answering a number of general questions.

Russell announced the winning entries as:

  • First place: Landscaping Reserve (£200 amazon voucher);
  • Second place; Antiguan Fellow (100 amazon voucher)
  • Third place: A Squared (£50 amazon voucher).

All seven teams will receive certificate of participation.
