Students in Swansea University library: there will be up to 70 of the new scholarships available each year.

Swansea University has launched scholarships in a wide range of subjects for overseas postgraduate PhD-level students applying for entry in September 2024 who can demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

The scholarships will qualify holders to be responsible for the Home component of the fee only, so they pay the same rate as UK students for the duration of their programme of study,

There will be up to 70 of these scholarships available each year.  They are known as Swansea University International Postgraduate Research Excellence Scholarship (SUIPRES).

SUIPRES scholarships are open to overseas PhD and Professional Doctorate applicants who would normally pay the international rate of tuition fees.  The scholarships will be awarded on merit, to applicants who can demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

To demonstrate excellence, applicants would have to give details of their academic track record, as well as other activities that may be relevant, such as prizes awarded, outreach activities, or teaching experience.

Scholarships are available for the following programmes:

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences (FHSS):

  • Department of Politics, Philosophy and International Relations: Politics, International Relations, Development Studies/International Development, Philosophy
  • Sociology and Criminology
  • Digital Media/Digital Humanities
  • Classics, Ancient History and Egyptology
  • Applied Linguistics

Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE): all PhD/Professional Doctorate programmes

Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Science (FMHLS): selected programmes to be determined.

Candidates who are awarded SUIPRES scholarships will be charged fees aligned to the UK rate per year, instead of the international rate. Information on tuition fees is available under the course details on these pages.

Who can apply:

The scholarship is open to overseas applicants who:

  • are commencing PhDs or Professional Doctorates in September 2024
  • would normally pay the international rate of tuition fees
  • can demonstrate excellence in academic achievement.

The scheme is not available to current PhD/Professional Doctorate students or candidates who are fully sponsored by a third party.  It is not open for Master level courses.

How to apply:

There is no separate application procedure for the SUIPRES scholarship.  Those who wish to apply should indicate within the standard application for their course that they would like to be considered for this scheme.

Applicants will then be informed in their offer letter whether or not they would also be eligible for a SUIPRES Scholarship.

Applicants must confirm that they have sufficient funds to cover the remaining fees for the whole period of registration as well as to cover their living costs.

Professor Gert Aarts, Deputy Pro-Vice Chancellor for Postgraduate Research said:

“Postgraduate research students are central to the research culture and environment at Swansea University, irrespective of their country of origin. With a large international student and staff community, doctoral researchers coming to Swansea can expect excellent support for their research projects and training, as well as the chance to enjoy our warm welcome and our enviable location between the mountains and the sea.

This scheme shows our commitment to support excellent international research students, maintaining our tradition of being an outward-facing and open place to carry out research.

We encourage anyone eligible who is planning to apply for a place to also specify that they wish to be considered for one of these scholarships.”
